École Militaire

“An army marches on its stomach, but it wins with its mind.”

Unique building of France — replaces the Barracks.

The École Militaire is more than a drill yard: it is a military academy where officers study engineering, ballistics, logistics, and mathematics. In France, training soldiers and advancing science are the same institution — every garrison town doubles as a college.

Effects

  • New units start with +1 XP (as a Barracks).
  • +2 research per turn in the city.

The École Militaire counts as a Barracks for all purposes; France cannot build an ordinary Barracks.

Strategy

The École Militaire rewrites France’s opening. An ordinary Barracks is a building you add in frontier cities when war looms; the École is a Library-sized research boost available a full technology earlier than Writing’s Library — so France wants one in every city, immediately. That gives France a peacetime research engine to pair with its wartime one (+1 research per city while at war): scholars in peace, science through conquest in war. Few civilisations change their build order this much — lean into it.

Historical Background

The École Militaire was founded in Paris in 1750 under Louis XV to give sons of poor military families a rigorous officer’s education. Its most famous cadet, a sixteen-year-old Corsican named Napoleon Bonaparte, completed the two-year artillery course in one year. The school embodied the Enlightenment conviction that war was a science — its curriculum of mathematics, fortification, and ballistics produced the officer corps that would later march across Europe.
