Academy
“The unexamined life is not worth living.”
Unique building of Greece — replaces the Library.
The Academy is the beating heart of Greek intellectual life, where philosophy, mathematics, and rhetoric are taught beneath shaded colonnades. Where other civilisations store knowledge, Greece debates it — and the ideas that emerge spill beyond the lecture halls to shape the city itself.

Effects
- +2 research per turn in the city.
- +1 culture per turn in the city.
The Academy counts as a Library for all purposes: it satisfies the University’s prerequisite, and Greece cannot build an ordinary Library.
Strategy
The Academy gives every Greek city a culture trickle from the moment Writing lands, which means borders that grow without waiting for Temples. For a civilisation built on aggressive expansion this is the quiet half of the strategy: plant a city, build an Academy, and watch its borders reach the resources you settled for while the research keeps your armies a technology ahead. Build one in every city, exactly as you would a Library — you are simply getting more for the same slot.
Historical Background
Plato founded his Academy in an olive grove outside Athens around 387 BCE, and it endured in various forms for over 900 years — arguably the longest-lived institution of higher learning in the ancient world. Aristotle studied there for twenty years before founding his own Lyceum. The Academy gave its name to the very idea of scholarly institutions; every academy since carries an echo of that grove.
